How to calculate true profit per SKU from Amazon and Walmart settlement reports

Marketplace payouts hide the truth in dozens of fee lines. This guide shows how to pull the right settlement or reconciliation report from Amazon Seller Central or Walmart Seller Center, what MarginGuard Pro calculates after your cost of goods (COGS), and how to read TrueProfit and PriceGuard results. Your file is processed in the browser and never uploaded; COGS you type stay in the browser. Figures are estimates, not tax or accounting advice. Utility Belt Labs is not affiliated with Amazon or Walmart.

1. What MarginGuard Pro does

  • Per-SKU profit. Revenue, fees by type, refunds, net payout and estimated profit after COGS — built from the settlement and reconciliation reports you already download.
  • TrueProfit alerts. Losing-SKU flags against your own threshold ($ or margin %), total estimated loss and worst offenders, Amazon vs Walmart profit for matching SKUs, and a what-if forecast for price and ad-spend changes.
  • PriceGuard. A minimum profit floor (% or $, global or per SKU), which prices break it, when a small price drop would wipe out the margin, and a recommended price — with the math shown.
  • Privacy. Runs in your browser; your file is never uploaded. COGS are remembered locally in the browser. Anyone can try the calculator on the site's synthetic sample data without an account.

2. Get the right report

MarginGuard Pro reads an Amazon settlement (or date-range transaction) report, or a Walmart Marketplace payments / reconciliation report. Download it yourself; MarginGuard Pro never connects to your marketplace account.

Amazon settlement report (Flat File V2)

  • Open the All Statements page of the Payments report (legacy Seller Central) or Finance Report (new Seller Central).
  • Optionally narrow the list with Select Date Range.
  • In the Actions column of the settlement period you want, click Download Flat File V2 and save the file.

Amazon custom date range instead

  • Go to Payments → Reports Repository, pick the account type, then Transaction report (CSV).
  • Choose Month or Custom date range (up to 365 days) and click Request report. It can take up to three hours.

Walmart Marketplace payments (reconciliation) report

  • The report is usually under Payments → Statements, for the pay cycle you want. Labels can differ in your account.
  • Walmart offers a more detailed legacy version and a summary version. Check that your file has per-item rows (SKU plus amounts) before relying on the results. Try your file and check the "Loaded…" message in the tool.

Supported Amazon stores: US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, UK, Germany and India (localized headers, decimal commas and local date formats). Walmart: US only.

Sources: Amazon help on payment reports, Amazon date range reports and Walmart payment statements.

3. How to use it

  • Open MarginGuard Pro. Signed out, load the built-in sample Amazon or Walmart data to see how the summary tiles, By SKU table, Fee Breakdown, TrueProfit alerts and PriceGuard tabs work. Sample figures on the site are synthetic estimates from shipped sample files, not real sales.
  • Choose the Amazon store or leave Auto-detect from file, and pick report currency or an optional approximate USD view (fixed, dated rate).
  • Set Default COGS / unit and click Recalculate, or edit any SKU's COGS in the By SKU table. Estimated profit = net payout − (cost per unit × net units sold) — only as good as the COGS you enter.
  • Use TrueProfit to set a losing-money threshold, compare Amazon vs Walmart for matching SKUs (load one file of each), and try the what-if forecast. Use PriceGuard for a global or per-SKU profit floor, break-even and recommended price (optional safety buffer).
  • With a subscription, drop in your own reports and export Summary CSV / Detailed CSV. Account-level fees (subscription, storage, advertising not tied to a SKU) still reduce overall profit even when they are not in SKU flags.

4. How to read the results

  • Revenue / Refunds / Fees — totals from the report, in the report's currency. Marketplace-facilitator taxes are excluded from revenue where detected.
  • Net payout — what the marketplace paid out for the loaded rows.
  • Est. profit / Margin — estimated profit after COGS, and as a share of revenue. Estimates only.
  • Losing money / below threshold — SKUs with estimated profit below $0, or below the threshold you set.
  • Break-even / recommended price — PriceGuard's math at your current fees and COGS; the recommendation can include an optional safety buffer.

5. Tips and limits

  • Every figure is an estimate from the reports you load and the COGS you enter — not tax or accounting advice.
  • Fees differ by marketplace and category; fee notes on the site are dated summaries of public fee pages. Confirm your category's rates in Seller Central.
  • Don't mix the synthetic samples with your own files; the tool keeps them apart.
  • Upload a settlement report and an overlapping date-range report and rows repeated across files are counted once (with a warning).
  • Steps and screens in Seller Central / Seller Center can change; the marketplaces' own help pages are the reference.
